Training course on testing the maximum laboratory density of asphalt mixtures
Within the program of courses held by the Civil Engineering Department, the Asphalt Laboratory held a training course entitled (Examination of maximum laboratory density of asphalt mixtures Gmm) for the period 18-22/2/2024.

The course covered the definition and training of examiners on how to conduct the maximum laboratory density test for non-compressed asphalt mixtures at a temperature of 25 according to the approved American specification ASTM D2041.

The environmental symposium entitled (The Nationally Determined Contributions Document for Climate Change, Combating Desertification, and the Importance of Green Spaces) will take place at ten o’clock in the morning on Monday, February 19, 2024, in the hall and in the hall of the martyr Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis in the department.
In the presence of the Head of the Civil Engineering Department, Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Majeed, Director of the Environmental Research Center, and a number of department professors and students.
The symposium began with the Assistant Director of the Baghdad Environment, Engineer Marwa Abdel Karim, providing a brief explanation of the activities and tasks of the Environment Directorate and the most important environmental problems and pollutants that the city of Baghdad suffers from.
Then, the official of the Climate Change Division, Engineer Sarmad Yousef, spoke about the causes of climate change and its effects on various aspects, the most important climate agreements and the outcomes of COP28, and touched on the National Contributions Document (NDC) in adaptation and mitigation and Iraq’s directions and procedures for climate change.
Then the official of the Agricultural Lands and Desertification Monitoring Division, Engineer Muhammad Amjad, presented his lecture on desertification, its causes and negative effects on humans and the environment, and practical ways to combat it. He talked about the phenomena of desertification in Baghdad and its causes, and the importance of afforestation projects, green belts, and increasing green spaces in mitigating the effects of desertification and climate change.
The symposium concluded by presenting the most important recommendations and agreeing on the necessity of activating joint work to develop solutions and treatments for environmental issues and challenges. Certificates of appreciation were also distributed to the participants. The Quality Assurance and Performance Evaluation Division discussed future coordination to hold a series of meetings to formulate a joint scientific cooperation agreement.
A teacher from the Civil Engineering Department receives the Iraqi Al Ain University Award for Pioneer Researchers
Professor Dr. Muhammad Youssef Fattah, Scientific Assistant for the Department of Civil Engineering, received the award presented by Al Ain University in Iraq to pioneering researchers.
On Saturday morning, February 10, 2024, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research held a ceremony to distribute the Iraqi Al Ain University Award, fourth edition 2024, sponsored by the Elsevier International Foundation for Scientific Research, where the Department of Civil Engineering at the University of Technology won one of these awards. This came through Professor Dr. Muhammad Youssef Fattah received the Iraqi Al Ain University Award for Pioneer Researchers
AUIQ Senior Scientific Research Awards, which were won by 47 researchers from various universities and entities according to the mechanisms established by the committee supervising the award.
A workshop on supporting the university’s magazine to enter the global framework
The Engineering and Technology Magazine, in cooperation with the Civil Engineering Department, held a workshop entitled: (Supporting the university’s magazine to enter the global databases)
This will take place at ten o’clock in the morning on Sunday, February 18, 2024, in the hall of the martyr Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis in the department.
In the presence of the Honorable Head of the Civil Engineering Department, Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Majeed, the Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Engineering and Technology, Professor Dr. Qusay Fadel Abdel Hamid Al-Salhi, and in the presence of the members of the Editorial Board of the magazine in the specialty of Civil Engineering, met with the faculty members and graduate students in the department. The Chairman of the Editorial Board touched on To important topics related to raising the level of the magazine locally and globally by publishing original and qualitative research in the magazine, in addition to the requirements required for research in terms of the English language and presenting the research using modern software. The Chairman of the Commission also touched on the adoption of research published in the magazine as primary sources for the research of faculty members and graduate students to be published in journals indexed within the Clarivate and Scopus databases to transform the university magazine from local to international as a basic requirement for entry into the global databases.

The Construction Engineering and Project Management Branch holds a meeting for its general assembly
The Construction Engineering and Project Management Branch in the Civil Engineering Department held a general assembly meeting on Sunday, February 18, 2024, in the department’s discussion room, in the presence of the head of the branch, Prof. Dr. Maan Salman Hassan and members of the branch’s teaching staff
During the meeting, twinning between the branch and some private colleges was discussed and the necessary measures were taken regarding this matter
Organizational matters and assignments for postgraduate and preliminary studies and permanent committees were also discussed, as well as the branch’s vision and plans to advance the educational process, and the curricula and tasks of the committees formed, each according to its role, were discussed.
A training course on Autocad
As part of the courses held by the Laboratory Division for its engineering and technical staff, the department’s primary computers laboratory held a training course in the Autocad program on 2/15/2024. The course included an educational and introductory introduction to the basics of the two-dimensional computer drawing program (AutoCAD) and learning how to draw projections and engineering plans for houses, buildings, and roads in a simplified manner.

The first scientific conference of the Department of Building Research
A number of civil engineering department teachers participated in the first scientific conference of the Department of Construction Research, one of the formations of the Ministry of Construction and Housing, under the slogan (Scientific research and innovation are the pillars of the construction and reconstruction movement) in the central hall of the Ministry of Construction and Housing on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, where Professor Dr. Muhammad Youssef Fattah chaired it. The scientific assistant to the scientific committee of the conference and one of the conference sessions, and he participated in the research titled (locally manufactured grates from compressed rubber recycling for geotechnical applications). Professor Dr. Basil Mahdi Al-Shathr and Professor Dr. Maan Salman also attended the conference sessions based on an invitation extended to them. During the opening of a patent exhibition, the Minister of Construction and Housing praised the University of Technology’s participation and support for the Building Research Department.

Today, Wednesday, February 14, 2024, the Roads and Bridges Engineering Branch held the first exam for graduation projects for the fourth stage of the academic year 2023-2024 by four committees formed according to research specializations by professors in the branch.

The Department of Civil Engineering / E-Learning Laboratory hosted the first axis exam (Administrative Skills Axis) for the course of the program for developing and qualifying the capabilities of university leaders and human resources, which was held by the Center for Continuing Education at the University of Technology on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, where the exam took place in two batches.

Discussion seminars for postgraduate students in the Structural Engineering branch
The Structural Engineering Branch in the Department of Civil Engineering held discussion seminars for postgraduate students of the Master of Structural Engineering to discuss the course of the branch’s students’ research on Wednesday, 2/7/2024, in the department’s discussion hall in the presence of the supervisors and a number of professors and graduate students in the department.
The students reviewed their completed research and the obstacles they face for the purpose of seeking to address them, and valuable interventions were presented by the professors to evaluate the course of the research by asking precise, important scientific questions related to the research.
A workshop on the educational portfolio and determining student outcomes (course assessment)
Under the patronage of the respected Head of the Civil Engineering Department, and within the lectures for developing teaching staff organized by the Quality Assurance and Performance Evaluation Division in the Civil Engineering Department, a three-day workshop was held on (the educational portfolio and determining student graduate outcomes (1-7)).
The lecture was delivered by the Head of the Civil Engineering Department, Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Majeed Khudair, to the teaching staff in the department.
The workshop included a detailed explanation of how to evaluate students’ performance within each learning outcome, highlighting how to write Key Performance Indicators KPI, as well as how to write Rubric by the subject’s teachers, which is a measure of student performance within each KPI, and thus the performance and level of all students and their abilities are evaluated. To possess the skills required within each learning outcome. Teachers were also stressed on the necessity of completing the evaluation of all subjects and submitting them within the educational package, and this procedure will continue to be implemented for the purpose of being able to obtain engineering program accreditation.
